For those of you interested, here is the reading list I assigned this past semester. "Smaller Works" includes some scholarly and philosophical essays, in addition to briefer autobiographical works. Feel free to use any of this list for your own classes, or for your own edification. I really can't recommend Scenes from Provincial Life enough!

THE MAJOR WORKS:
Augustine – Confessions (c. 396)
Alison Bechdel – Fun Home (2006)
Jean-Jacques Rousseau – Confessions (c. 1765)
Lucy Grealy – Autobiography of a Face (1994)
Yukio Mishima – Sun and Steel (1968)
J.M. Coetzee – Scenes from Provincial Life (2009)

THE SMALLER WORKS:
Robert Lowell – Selections from Life Studies (1959)
Sylvia Plath – Selections from Ariel (1965/2004)
Philippe Lejeune – “The Autobiographical Pact”
Julian Baggini – “The Philosopher's Autobiography”
Virginia Woolf – "On Being Ill"
Michel Foucault – “Technologies of the Self”
Lynn Barber – “An Education”

FILMS:
Jonathan Caouette – Tarnation (2003)
Lone Scherfig – An Education (2009)

We also made extensive use of the anthology Autobiography: A Reader for Writers (ed. Robert Lyons), which contains many short autobiographical pieces and writing exercises. Also, to help with understanding autobiography theory, I assigned excerpts from Sidonie Smith's and Julia Watson's Reading Autobiography: A Guide for Interpreting Life Narratives, which is an EXCELLENT textbook.
